I've wanted to write about this for a while, it's been really annoying me lately. Annoying to the point that it gives me headaches!!
This has happened more than once, i'm standing in a line waiting for something and the person behind me is breathing down my neck!! i want to turn around and push them away. I don't know why people don't respect the Personal Space.
I've read a book about the body language, ( i read it before i moved to Dubai, Fadi :D), anyway and the writer has taken the effort to write a whole chapter about Personal Space which proves that i am not the only one annoyed of it. There are different zones to every person and according to what you mean to them you are assigned a zone that you can get into. Ofcourse there is no physical seperators and you can cross the line but no guarantees on the reaction.
The interesting thing is that the classification usually doesn't change amongst humans but the distances does according to where you live! for example if you are living in a crowded city you stranger zone would be 1 or 1.5 meters whereas if you are living in rural areas it goes up to 2 or 2.5 meters. The only zone that does change is the intimate zone. This is where you allow the person to get so close that you are no longer two but one! i don't mean that in a sexual way, i meant it in a romantic way ;) though it is sexually true.
Another thing the writer mentioned which i really liked is how people react in an elevator, all stranger and if they want to leave some personal space then they better go in one by one. But what people do in this case is keep staring at the floor numbers 1,2,3 (can't it go any faster),...,10,11,12 (almost there)... 15,16 (yeppeeeeeee i am out of here!!).
I wish those people who stood behind me yesterday and the day before and the day before that... could read this! on the other hand it won't matter. i should wish for something more productive like i wish the people who will stand behind me today or tomorrow or the day after READ this and stay the hell away from me!!
